Love to Tela, Honduras
By Jenny Barrera
I am happy to tell you about our wonderful trip! Print the Love gave away love and joy through photographs to our friends in Tela, Honduras this month. It was great seeing the joy on their faces when they received their pictures. We gave photos away to people around the beach, in the park and the town center. Tela is in the north part of Honduras in the department of Atlantida. It is a 5.5 hour drive from the city capital - Tegucigalpa where I live.
On our way to Tela we stopped at the restaurant, Retro Café, where you can find the best baleadas in Honduras. Baleadas are a traditional Honduran food that has a wheat tortilla folded in half with beans, cheese and cream. You can add more things to it like egg, plantain, avocado, meat, etc.
We arrived to Tela very late because it was raining a lot on our way. In the morning we went to the beach and we were able to give away a lot of pictures and meet many wonderful hard-working people. We gave a picture to the man that was helping people park. Mr. Alberto was very excited to get his photograph and called over his lifeguard friends so they could get a picture too.
On the beach, many people sell different things to generate income for their families. There are many women who sell coconut bread, coconut candy, coconut tablets, and sweets from the Garifuna tribe. Another thing you can find on the beach are people who charge to make beautiful braids like the ones we can see our friend has in the photo. It was my friend Monica’s birthday that day, so we were able to give her a big birthday hug and give her a photo of her that she will be able to keep for her entire life.
We met a man who was selling homemade items he made himself such as bracelets, necklaces, keychains, etc. to generate an income for his family. His name was Luis and he was very happy with the photograph we gave him.
We even met a group of Mariachis who are looking to make an income on these beautiful beaches of Tela, Honduras by singing songs to those who are enjoying their time on the beach. We then went to the central park of Tela to give away photos to families. We met two ladies who have been friends for 7 years and they asked us to take a photo of them. They were people so full of life and with such a positive attitude. While we were walking through the park there were some people working on a construction site and they asked us to please take a photo of them as a team. We were very happy that they were so excited about their photo.
I was also able to visit Uncle Danilo, a great guy with a great sense of humor, who loved getting a photo. At the gas station, the the gas attendant asked us to take a photo of him with his friend who worked with him as a guard, both of whom were very happy to receive this gift.
It was an incredible trip full of joy, new adventures, being able to give love and happiness through the gift of a photograph, which is unique and a blessing. Thank you to Print the Love for bringing so much joy through such a unique gift that people can keep for a lifetime.
